HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Karnatak University is the second oldest university in Karnataka state and one of the reputed institutions for higher education in the country. It started functioning from April 1949 with Mr. R.A.Jahagirdar as the first Vice-Chancellor. It was Late Dr. D.C.Pavate who visualized the role of this university and strove to make this, one of the best in the country giving it national and international recognition. The university is re-accredited with ‘A’ Grade in the year 2008 by NAAC.

The Karnatak State University Act – 2001 governs the University. The Jurisdiction of the university is extended over Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada districts. The university campus named as “Pavate Nagar” has 48 post graduate departments, more than 280 affiliated colleges, a P.G. department of Marine Biology at Karwar, P.G.centers at Haveri and Gadag, NIC network (RENIC), center for excellence in polymer Science and many more.

The idea of starting a college in North Karnataka was floated as early as 1876.The real beginning of the endeavors however was not made till the year 1909.The Karnatak College Association was formed with Late Shri.R.B.Rodda as Chairman. Later due to efforts of Late Shri.Diwan Bahadur Srinivas Rao Rodda, Late Shri.Rao Bahadur Rudragouda Artal and Late Shri.M.B.Choubal, the foundation stone of Karnatak College was laid on 20th June 1917 by the then Governer of Bombay (earstwhile Bombay Province). Karnatak College was established with an intention of providing something more than a machine for grinding our graduates and a place where the young men and women will learn to be athletes, self reliant and loyal citizens of country. Late Sir. Siddappa Kambli played a vital role in establishing the science wing in Karnatak College in 1924. After the establishment of Karnatak University at Dharwad, in 1958, it took over the Karnatak College to run it as a Model College. Later, the Karnatak College was bifurcated into two sister colleges as “Karnatak Science College” & “Karnatak Arts College” sharing a common campus and other campus amenities for administrative purpose. Late Dr.G.S.Paramasivaiah, a student of the Nobel-laureate Sir.C.V.Raman, was the first Principal of the Karnatak Science College.

  • The college has a huge campus, sprawling over 55 acres of land, with eco-friendly atmosphere. It is centrally located and well connected by roads to the major parts of Dharwad City.
  • The college has a Governing Council headed by the Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University and Syndicate members, three staff members of the college as members and the Principal as Secretary. It guides and regulates all the activities of the college.
  • The college has seven major basic science departments viz Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Criminology & Forensic Science, Botany and Zoology and Department of BCA & BSc(Computer Science) Each department has its own library, excellent museum, well- equipped laboratories and well-furnished classrooms.
  • It is functioning with 50 highly qualified and experienced teachers. Most of them have doctoral degree.
  • The college has a central library building called “The Padmashri V.K.Gokak Library” and is well stocked with books exceeding one Lakh, including the latest editions. About 2000 titles are added every year and about 60 periodicals are subscribed too. It has sufficient space and seating facility for 200 students who intend to refer the books in the library. The library is normally kept open from 9 am to 9 pm on all working days and 11 am to 6 pm during vacations. The books that are supplied to the students are of two categories, 1) UGC aided textbooks 2) The college has well equipped sports infrastructure for both indoor and outdoor games with two playgrounds, indoor badminton hall. Tennis court and Gymkhana building. There are 11 departments in the Gymkhana each headed by a chairperson and a student secretary (selected as per Gymkhana constitution).
  • A students home, Health Center, Syndicate Bank, Canteen and an Auditorium of ‘international standard’ Annaji Rao Sirur Rangamandir, “SRIJANA” DONATED BY ALUMINI OF THE COLLEGE Padmashree Nandan Nilekani former CEO, INFOSYS are important and special features of this grand college.
  • The college has well-furnished two Boys hostels viz “ Krishna and Godaveri” accommodating around 100 boys and a well-furnished Ladies hostel “Kaveri” accommodating around 140 girls. A new wing has been added recently to this hostel accommodating 60 more girl students. The limited students are admitted to these hostels for the available vacancies as per the University rules.
  • There is provision for NCC and NSS and also to take an active part in sports of their choice.
  • Every department has its own study circle, to enhance the academic knowledge of the students through seminars, symposia, workshops and lectures by different dignitaries.
  • The college has a Student’s Welfare Officer. He is meant to look after the general welfare of the students. He looks after the grievances of the students in co-ordination with the Principal, Wardens, HOD’s, NSS & NCC officers.
  • “AKKA”, The Ladies Association of the College brings together all the girl students and lady staff members to interact and address their problems through various activities.
  • “SNEHA” is the Girl Students Counseling cell. The staff members of our college meet the college girls to provide them emotional support and to arrange for professional help in specific cases.
  • VICHAR KRANTHI: A thought provoking fortnightly college bulletin displayed on the Notice Board provides an opportunity to the students for writing scientific articles, poems, brain storming articles & cartoons etc.
  • The college has research laboratories in the concerned departments. In all the departments there are teachers recognized as research guides and are guiding many students for their Ph.D, which is unique features of this college. So far the college has produced more than 20 Ph.D.s and many M.Phil.s. Most of the teachers are having ongoing research projects sponsored by UGC and other funding agencies.
  • Scholarships and Prizes: Every year the following scholarships and prizes are announced by the college.
  • Category – I, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB scholarships: SC/ST scholarships: Rural Scholarships, Scholarships for Physically Handicapped; National Merit Scholarships, Sanskrit Scholarships, Urdu Scholarships, Scholarships for Ex-servicemen, Goud Sarswat Brahmin Scholarships, Lingayat students Scholarships, Nijalingappa Nidhi Scholarships.
  • College open merit Scholarships (10 Scholarships for each class); Fellowships Karnatak College Golden Jubilee Prize; SirSiddappaKambali Prize, Karnatak College Platinum Jublee Cash Prize,Dr.G.V.Joshi Cash Prize, Dr.M.M.Joshi Cash Prize; Smt. Sheriffa Begum Nawab Cash Prize, Smt.Kamala Balekundri Cash Prize; Prof.(Smt) Vidya Sapre Choidhari Cash Prize:LT.Col R.S.Desai Cash Prize,Smt Gangubai Desai Cash Prize and Botany teachers cash prize;Latashri Parashuram F.Kolkar cash prize. “The emblem of our college symbolizes the excellence in teaching and research in all the basic sciences such as Physical, Chemical, Biological and Earth Sciences and their applications”.

  • The CREEPER is the symbol of the environment which surrounds, sustains and protects all living organisms.
  • The ROUND BOTTOM FLASK and a TEST TUBE stand to represent the enquiring, keen observation and experimenting mind of a specially an analytical chemist in the department of Chemistry and Biotechnology.
  • The FLOWER TWIG represents the beauty and tenderness of life around us and the flora, inspiring its fascinating study undertaken in our Botany and Genetics departments.
  • There is a pair of a BIRD and FISH symbolizing non aquatic and aquatic animal kingdom and innumerable mysteries awaiting exploration in our Zoology, Microbiology and Fisheries departments.
  • The FINGER PRINT PATTERN signifies the infallibility of scientific evidence in the administration of justice and the study of Criminology and Forensic Science in our college.
  • The GLOBE represents the uniqueness of our planet and challenges offered for its study undertaken in the department of Geography.
  • The CHISEL and DIAMOND symbolize the hidden wealth in the earth and its study in the department of Geology.
  • The structure of the PLANETARY ELECTRONS symbolizes the enormous energy and the possibilities offered to man for study of the universe in the department of Physics, Electronics and Computer Science.
