Department Profile

Department of Botany was started in the year 1935 as department of Biology and moved to its independent building in the year 1951, from Zoology Department. The Department is situated in a lush green environment which is covered by thick vegetation. The department has 2 well ventilated lecture halls, with the capacity of 50 student, 3 well equipped laboratories and a research lab. An independent library with the collection of about 3000 recent text books and journals including rare collections is being maintained in the Department apart from the central library. Students and staff members are provided with the internet facility. The Department also maintains a beautiful Botanical Garden which has a unique collection of medicinal, Ornamentals, timber, plants species like psilotum, Equisetum Guaicum, Podocarpus, Cycas etc. The Department is further strengthened by a museum with very good collection of 518 bottled specimens and models which are used for teaching. The department also has herbaria with number of herbarium. Student seminars, group discussions and scientific talks by eminent scientists are being regularly organized by Botany study circle. Project works, home assignments and botanical tours are regularly organized by the department.

All the faculties in the department are Ph.D. degree holders and all of them are recognized research guides of Karnatak University. 11 students are perusing their Ph.D. and 4 students have completed Ph.D. degree. A number of UGC sponsored projects have already been completed by staff members and there are few major and minor ongoing projects in the department.

A special subject Genetics is housed in the Department. An independent laboratory with infrastructure has been established in the department to support both students and research scholars. Many of the past students of the department have been absorbed in Govt. and private sectors and working in different capacities. Many students have cleared NET – JRF/TOEFEL / GATE etc. exams and perusing Ph.D. degree in various National and International Universities / research organizations.
